Devondre Cooper, of Worcester, faces a slew of charges stemming from the Friday, March 24, daytime break-in at a home on Everard Street, Worcester police said.
Officers were called to the home around 5:30 p.m. after a neighbor noticed a man trying to pry the home's backdoor open with a crowbar. Police rushed to the scene and found Cooper hard to work trying to steal the fruits of someone else's hard work, police said.
Cooper bolted when he saw officers and ran through backyards to get away, but Usain Bolt he was not. Police captured him within a few moments, authorities said.
To make himself lighter, Cooper dropped his bookbag before he ran. Police found a sledgehammer and a pistol in the pack, officials said.
Cooper is charged with —
- Breaking and entering during the daytime with intent to commit a felony
- Possession of burglarious instruments
- Vandalism
- Possession of a firearm without a license
- Possession of ammunition without an FID card
- Possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony
Nothing was stolen from the home, but the crowbar damaged the doorframe and lock, police said.
